League of Legends is a competitive multiplayer game where every single bit of performance matters. Before I say anything about the game’s settings, I have to highlight that the main part of how well the game performs is your own PC’s components.
In today’s day and ever-increasing supply shortages, not everyone can get their hands on a good PC and play at a satisfying framerate. To see if you’re kitted out for playing the game at all, check out the minimum requirements for League of Legends on sites like canyourunit.
After you’ve done that and gotten the green light, you can proceed with reading this article.
Framerate in games like League of Legends determines how smooth the game runs and how interactable it will be, as well as how fast your inputs will be registered. Of course, this is also largely determined by your screen’s refresh rate and your mouse’s response time, but there are in-game ways of improving this, too.
Though League is a nice-looking game, squeezing FPS out of everything we can is much more important, so let’s begin.
First off, the client.
The League of Legends client is a tasking application even for powerful PCs due to its lack of optimization. However, there is a great option within it that improves performance substantially and speeds up everything.
The Low Spec mode will disable all animations and the bloated flashy stuff in the League of Legends client, severely reducing its resource usage and speeding it up substantially.
If you like opening chests/re-rolling and want that second of uncertainty – well, that’s gone, too, and everything you click will be performed instantaneously.
This is a great addition to the client and a much-needed one both for power users and those with weaker machines.
Now, onto the game.
The main settings in the game for you should look something like this:

Of course, if your resolution is smaller than 1080p, you’ll set it to something else. Keep in mind not to set the resolution to Borderless if you have a weaker machine. A dedicated Fullscreen option will allocate all resources to the game while it’s open.
If you can’t handle your native resolution, consider decreasing it to 1280×720 at the least, as anything below will be blurry and greatly hinder your ability to play.
All other settings are based on preference, and I won’t detail that since they don’t impact performance whatsoever.
Of course, this balanced low-medium setting makes the game look nice and perform well. If you’re still having problems, consider applying the lowest possible settings and see how that turns out.
Finalizing Thoughts
In all honesty, I do not recommend you play League of Legends if you cannot maintain at least 60 fps at all times. This is because this game gets pretty intensive pretty fast, and you’ll need all the advantages you can get to remain on top.
You see, everything revolves around speed. Not just the speed of the Champions, but the game’s as well. Internet connection and framerate can both be your biggest enemies and your best friends. Having a better connection and a better setup than the enemy gives you a great advantage in reaction time, cast times, etc.
Everything you do will be faster, and that is huge. If you are on a low spec machine, always scour the internet and your local stores for some second-hand components. I’d look for a GTX 1060 at the least for a GPU, and a Ryzen 5 2600 would be perfect. These two combined will give you an amazing League of Legends experience, as well as allow you to play a myriad of other games without any issue.
Also, make sure to have at least 16GB of RAM, as anything less is too little today.
