LoL Worlds 2023 is coming back to South Korea. Naturally, this raised questions: What’s changed in the tournament format? Diving into the facts provides answers.
World Championship in South Korea: The Deets
For the third time, South Korea will play host to the LoL World Championship. This might just be the first time Faker plays on his home turf. The whole shebang will unfold across multiple cities. Seoul and Busan have been chosen to roll out the red carpet, with the Play-In and Swiss phase (more on that soon) kicking off in Seoul before switching gears to Busan.
The grand finale? It’s happening at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul – a behemoth of an indoor venue accommodating nearly 17,000 fans.
Scheduling: Mark These Dates
The curtain raiser is set a tad later than usual. Why? The 19th Asian Games are happening from September 23 to October 8 in Hangzhou, China. Riot’s giving the teams ample time to hustle back to South Korea. The Play-In phase sets off on October 10 at LoL Park in Seoul.
The cherry on top this year? A brand-new format that Riot’s rolled out for both international tournaments. Case in point, the “Worlds Qualifying Series”, a pre-tourney event deciding which team earns their spot at the LoL World Championship 2023.
Play-Ins, Swiss Phase, and Knockouts
The Play-In phase sees eight teams in two groups duking it out best-of-three style. The victors move on to the spanking new “Stage 2”.
Then enters the Swiss Phase. Here, 16 teams face off in a Swiss format, each team battling until they either clinch three wins or suffer three losses.
And the knockouts? The trusty old format everyone knows and cherishes. Quarterfinals, semis, and then the grand finale.
With all these updates and the stellar venue, LoL Worlds 2023 is surely an event no one should miss.
