There are over 150 million players in League of Legends. Each of these players has a certain amount of skill and knowledge in the game. Riot has consistently recognized this disparity in skills between players, which created the Division system.
Climbing through the Divisions is never an easy feat. You rely on many random factors beyond your control and a vast number that relate directly to you.
The Gold Division is one of the most challenging places you can be in. The players’ skills disparity is considerable, and games tend to be quite random. Sometimes, you can’t even predict the outcome of a Lane matchup, let alone anything else.
This guide serves to help point out some key things you should pay attention to while climbing out of Gold. It’s not meant to be taken as gospel but only as advice on how to improve your game to climb through the Gold ranks effectively.
So, without further ado, let’s begin with our guide!

How Difficult is Gold?
As I’ve said in the introduction, Gold is undoubtedly one of the most challenging Divisions to play in. Players tend to be on various skill levels, which leads to unbalanced compositions and matches.
You will either have an insanely good team at the game or the complete opposite. Most likely, it will be a mix of the two. However, things tend to get pretty frustrating and difficult to deal with due to these commonly unbalanced matches.
The average Gold player isn’t that great at the game. It’s an entirely different story between Gold 4 and Gold 1 players. While progressing through Gold, you’ll go through the most significant transformation in terms of skills. You’re basically going from Low to High Elo in a few Division ranks.
Thus, the skill curve required to play well in Gold is also very steep.
So, how difficult is it? It is indeed more complex than Silver but not as tricky as the genuine High Elo ranks such as Platinum or Diamond.
1. Communicate Through Pings

Pings are crucial to getting better at League of Legends. They are masterfully designed to allow for quick and easy communication. The ping system in League is so good that you don’t even need a chat to do anything. Focusing too much on the chat can take away your concentration from the actual game.
Using the pings, however, is straightforward and immediate. It won’t disturb your focus and give your allies all the required information. I genuinely love the ping system since it is so reliable and helpful for various situations. Learning how to utilize pings for communication is pivotal for improving at the game and climbing the ranks.
People in Gold also tend to be toxic, so the pings might dissuade them from arguing with you. The chat can sometimes only serve to agitate toxic and frustrated players further, and thus the proper use of pings may make them abandon their self-arguing in the chat.
The pings are excellent and valuable tools that you should learn how to use immediately.
2. Follow Up on Calls
I always advise players to be at their maximum focus whenever they want to climb the ranks. Lacking concentration will cause you to lose the match, and that’s almost a certainty.
Following up on calls is a crucial part of coherent team play. Without the priorly mentioned concentration, you won’t be able to follow up or call something yourself. There will always be a player who takes the leading role in the game. Follow what they might ping/say and cooperate as much as possible.
If you happen to be the leader in the match, make sure you communicate the calls to your allies properly. This ties into the previous segment of mastering pings which can be fantastic for any shot-calling you need.
Having a good sense of cooperation and following up on what your allies call will develop your team play and communicative skills to help you climb higher ranks.
3. Don’t Be Greedy
Greed is a plague upon League of Legends. Every player tends to get way too greedy at times, and it always seems to turn out bad. Whenever you’re greedy, you will end up losing the fight. It’s just a given, really.
Higher-ranked players tend to have the ability to mitigate their greed and even use it to their advantage. In Gold, you won’t exactly know how to do that. Even in High Elo games, greed often goes wrong and gets severely punished by the other side. Rarely does it turn out well for the greedy party.
Avoid being greedy while climbing through Gold. Every bit of advantage you can get – get it. Don’t squander your lead just for one extra kill or something less important. As long as you maintain your domination over the opponent, greed isn’t required. You can safely beat them without overextending so far as to lose your leverage over them.
Therefore, greed is never good. Avoid being a greedy bastard in the game, as many players tend to be. It will only cause you to lose your matches and nothing else – it never pays off.

4. Reduce Your Champion Pool
This goes without saying in Gold. Never branch out too far with your Champion pool. Keep concentrated on what you know and what feels best. If you play way too many Champions, you will only end up not climbing in an endless search to find what’s best for climbing.
Find a role and a Champion class that suits you and your playstyle. Hone your skills in that field, learn a few Champions, and narrow things down. It would help if you become an expert in a select part of the map, not seeking to be the best in every aspect. Don’t waste time on a futile quest of playing everything that’s hot right now.
Concentrate your skills on a particular role and stay there. Naturally, you should always seek to learn and understand how every role and class works in the game. But the Ranked ladder isn’t a place to do this. Normal matches and practice tools are great for this, and you should utilize them accordingly. For climbing, be sure to never have a blindside – in your concentration, Champion pool, skills, etc.
Be on Top of your game at all times, and you will surely succeed.
Best Champions for Escaping Gold
Your skill is a key factor in how well you’ll perform in any division out there. However, it’s never a bad idea to give yourself an edge by default. Some Champions are ideally suited for particular divisions, and the following three are the best in the current meta.
But never forget that no Champion can help you on its own without enough effort and practice. Give the game time, and you will eventually see a net positive increase in performance.
Let’s start with the Champs.
If you’d like to see more champions that will get you out of the gold division, have a look at this list
1. Garen

Garen has been a dominant force in the Top Lane for God knows how long now. Sitting comfortably at an S+ tier on all reputable tier lists, he’s just an insane Tank Carry. Capable of singlehandedly winning games, Garen is beyond absurd in more ways than one, so let’s discuss.
He has a ton of sustainability, i.e., he doesn’t have to leave the Lane that often. Garen can stay on Top infinitely if his opponent doesn’t have enough ways of consistently damaging him. With how intense his pressure is, he can make the enemy bleed while remaining healthy all the time. This allows him to achieve an advantage early on – something which he intends to keep until the very end.
By the time Garen leaves the Lane, and it’s not likely that he will, he’s a total beast. He can slice through an entire team with his E, apply a long silence with his Q and deter any damage with his W. But what’s most remarkable is his Ultimate, a true damage execution that can deal over 1/3 of the enemy’s HP. I’ve seen a Garen Ult deal upwards of 2000 or so damage – an insane number.
He’s also one of the easiest, most simple Champions to date. Anyone and their grandma can play him, and thus he just had to be here. Whether you’re escaping Gold, Diamond, or any other division, Garen is always a perfect tool for the job.
2. Annie

Alongside Garen, Annie is part of the oldest Champions in the game. While the dude above was reworked several years ago, she remains in her original state today. Though some of her spells were updated, they’re practically identical to what they were back in 2009. Don’t let her appearance fool you, as she’s one demonic child on the path of fire and destruction.
Annie’s early game is safe and sound, allowing her to farm up quite a lot. Her Q is the primary way of gaining farm, as its Mana is refunded if it kills a minion. She can passively play until she hits level 6. This is the point where she unlocks her full combo, a deadly set of spells that can eviscerate just about anyone. Scarcely do people manage to survive a full Annie attack, and that’s why she’s on this guide.
She can have a tremendous solo impact on the game, and her AOE works insanely well in team fights. Her Ultimate and W can stun an entire team, and for a long duration at that. Mentioning just how much damage her spells do would be equally logical as describing Veigar. It’s enough to say that it’s a lot, and Annie will utilize it to its fullest extent.
There’s no objective complexity to her. Learning how her essential and most decisive combo works are enough to play her well. She’s not a Champion that requires too much mechanical knowledge, making her perfect for an intermediate Gold player. She also has a good reputation in the higher divisions, but Gold is her domain, and she will dominate it.
3. Warwick

This bloodthirsty maniac is a dominant force in just about any division in the game. Naturally, he will appear in a guide about Gold. While the lower ranks are not his forte, he’s just as good in them as in the high Elo. He’s much more effective when players are aware of teamwork and cooperation – something that Silver and below players aren’t.
He’s a Jungler who appears in every corner of the map. His map pressure cannot be countered by any Jungler out there. Hell, I’d even go as far to say that he’s the best regarding pure pressure. If you’re low HP, you will appear on his map, and he will come and hunt you down. His thirst for killing just cannot be satiated through regular assists and ganks.
Speaking of ganks, Warwick will never leave your Lane alone. Gank after gank, he’ll come over to bite you in the throat. Through this type of gameplay, he’ll get his allies fed and strong quickly, making it increasingly difficult to deal with his team. With his speed and sustainability, he’ll also have enough time to take objectives between ganks. It’s excruciatingly challenging to stop Warwick from his onslaught.
I just love him a lot. He’s not too complex, nor will it take more than a few games to understand him. As the meta shifts, there’s always something new and fresh for him to build. This versatility gives him a fun factor never before seen in League of Legends. He’s a fantastic Champion that you should give a try, and he will make climbing out of Gold that much easier.
