League of Legends, popularly known as LoL, has been dealing with the issue of ‘Smurf’ accounts for quite some time. However, the ease of creating and acquiring these accounts has been increasingly criticized by many players, as it seems to have become the norm rather than the exception. For those unfamiliar with the term, ‘Smurf‘ accounts in League of Legends are additional accounts created by experienced players who already have a main account.
Creating a Smurf account in LoL is a relatively straightforward process, as players are technically allowed to own multiple accounts. However, the massive proliferation of Smurf accounts over recent seasons, particularly in ranked play, has sparked growing resistance within the community.
Smurf accounts are not exclusive to League of Legends and can be found in other multiplayer games as well. The purpose of such accounts is to allow experienced players to compete in lower ranks where they have an absolute advantage. These accounts are often used to experiment with new champions, roles, or strategies without jeopardizing the ELO of the players’ main accounts. Given the advantage of competing against less-skilled players and teams, this obviously increases the chances of victory.
Regrettably, the majority of players utilize their Smurf accounts with the aim of dominating their opponents and building long winning streaks. This can deter new LoL players from enjoying the game, as they frequently find themselves defeated by more experienced players. An additional concern is the behavior of Smurf players. They have little worry about repercussions for toxic actions since their main accounts remain unaffected. This often results in a hostile environment in the lower ELOs, further discouraging newcomers.
The phenomenon of Smurf accounts has led to the development of an entire industry over the past few years, with business booming. Leveling bots have become commonplace, and prices for fresh Level 30 accounts are quite low. The pricing structure itself reveals the extent of the Smurf issue: a Bronze account now costs significantly more than one in Platinum ELO.
There’s no denying that the prevalence of Smurf accounts poses a threat to the future of League of Legends, particularly by discouraging new players. Unless Riot Games takes active measures to combat this issue, it’s likely to exacerbate. After all, there’s a certain allure in overpowering weaker players and winning consecutive games – and this allure isn’t likely to fade anytime soon.
