League of Legends has hundreds of items under its belt. That’s only natural for a game that has existed for over a decade. However, some Items stand out among the rest, and players find themselves confused about which one to buy.
With so many items, similarities in use are bound to happen. Thus, we’re here to compare a few of the most popular purchases head-to-head.
This article will go over the Void Staff and Rabadon’s Deathcap. These two AP Items have been the staple of Mage builds for as long as the game has been around. Old and yet still dominant, these two are AP goliaths that refuse to become obsolete.
First, we will highlight their individualities and then compare them head-to-head to see who’s the winner.
So, let’s go!

Void Staff
Stats: +65 AP, +45% Magic Penetration
Price: 2800g
Void Staff is one of the most basic Items League of Legends has ever produced. However, the might of these basic stats is just so incredible that it still manages to be immensely popular among the AP crowd. I mean, come on, 45% Magic Penetration? That would make an AD Champion purchase it just for the sake of the stat.
45% Magic Penetration means that you will ignore nearly half of the enemy’s Magic Resist. As the Tanks have gotten quite chunky in recent years, Void Staff is an excellent tool for deterrence. It allows AP burst mages to deal a ton more damage to such Champions without breaking a sweat.
The 65 AP is also a great stat, though it pales compared to some other AP items. Despite that, it’s still good enough to justify the Item’s price alongside the Magic Penetration stat. At a meager 2800g, this is one of the most valuable items you can get in League of Legends. If there ever was a bang for the buck – you’ve found it.
I love Void Staff, and it can be a real power spike for some Champions. For example, Kassadin is most formidable once he purchases this Item which causes him to annihilate even the healthiest of opponents.

Rabadon’s Deathcap
Stats: +120 AP
Unique Passive – Magical Opus: Increase your ability power by 35%
Price: 3600g
Equally basic, Rabadon’s Deathcap is one of the most popular End Items in League of Legends. Coming in second just behind the Guardian Angel is undoubtedly the real cherry-on-top for AP builds.
Of course, for a Champion like Veigar, Rabadon’s can be a 1st option purchase or even 2nd if he wishes to rush something else. But since that is a unique case, that doesn’t reflect on the general use of the Item.
Rabadon’s Deathcap is focused on giving your spells as much extra kick as possible. Though it does not help against enemy defenses, it sort of makes the defenses worth next to nothing. Due to the sheer amount of AP this Item alone can give you, your spells will become so much more potent that those priorly mentioned defenses become obsolete. They will have to put up much more effort to defend against your newly acquired power.
Despite all of this, the price of Rabadon’s Deathcap is quite high, which is relatively justified by its stats. However, what justified it the most is its End Item nature. As a Late Game option, when gold isn’t an issue, the price isn’t that important in general.
Rabadon’s Deathcap is an infamous item that refuses to fade into obscurity even though it’s as old as League itself. Everyone has heard of this Item and knows how much impact it can have, especially when that tiny purple bastard Veigar picks it up.

Head-To-Head Comparison
Now for the comparing.
Void Staff: +65 AP, +45% Magic Penetration vs. Rabadon’s Deathcap: +120 AP, +35% AP
This is a difficult one. I would say that the magic penetration is much more helpful against Tanks, while the insanely increased AP will be great in general use. Therefore, due to the specialized use of the Magic Penetration stat and the way lesser AP addition, I give this one to Rabadon’s Deathcap.

Void Staff: 2800g vs. Rabadon’s Deathcap: 3600g
A considerable gap and an evident winner. Void Staff is a whopping 800 gold cheaper, nearly 3 kills worth. That’s just way too much to find a justification for Rabadon’s win in this regard, so I’m going to have to give this one to Void Staff.
The following and last section will determine the winner, so keep reading to find out who came out on top.

General Impact
Void Staff is an early Item that can serve as a power spike for many Champions in the game. Its late-game use and impact are found against healthy and tanky opponents that might be causing issues to your team. Therefore, it’s an excellent team-based and anti-Tank tool that can hugely impact the game’s outcome.
Rabadon’s is an End Item that serves as a finishing touch to your build. Since the Item is picked up reasonably late and serves to buff you as much as possible in the game’s closing moments, it won’t be as present to have a widespread impact on the game.
Thus, it is a clear victory for Void Staff in this regard.
In a head-to-head comparison, Void Staff is a much more valuable Item that can have a long-term and lasting impact on the entire game.

Conclusion
Despite being the victorious Item in this direct comparison, Void Staff isn’t inherently better. These two Items go insanely well along with each other, and you will likely build them both during the game. Thus, one cannot be called better over the other as they are core and complementary parts of the AP build. They are so often found together in Builds that they might as well be one Item. Void Staff may have much more general use and impact, but Rabadon’s is right up there in terms of overall item quality.
I hope you’ve found this article informative and fun to read, and I wish you all the best on the Summoner’s Rift.
